Case studies of green mining

Green mining can take many forms. A firm can remove vegetation in chunks during mining, and return it later on site. Rehabilitation of a site can entail planting native seedlings, or restoration of farmland. As well, firms work with councils, Department of Conservation, and sometimes communities on off-site biodiversity conservation, e.g. pest control, translocation of native species, riparian planting, wetland restoration. That work may be a condition of development, and/or carried out in other contexts, for example, in gaining a "social licence to operate".
