The minerals industry is among sectors of NZ society where great strides have been made over the last 20 years or so. to manage discharges to water and air, to rehabilitate exploration and mining sites, to manage effects on biodiversity, to help communities plan their future after the mine closes, and more besides.

Environmental management is core business for the NZ minerals sector; examples can be seen in Straterra's growing collection of case studies below. Industry awards programmes are giving more prominence to innovative environmental initiatives, such as cleaner burning of coal, managing acid mine drainage and ecological restoration of mine sites, all finalists in the 2013 Minerals West Coast Environmental Awards.

In addition many mining companies participate in initiatives such as the Business for Biodiversity Offsets Programme (BBOP), the Sustainable Business Council’s corporate ecosystem services review, the Global Mining Initiative, and others.

Through these avenues, companies are improving their reporting on sustainability, their vision for their businesses and best-practice.
