Sioban Hartwell GHD New Zealand

Sioban is a member of the GHD New Zealand Operating Centre Management Group (OCMG) and is the Market Lead for Water in New Zealand.

As Market Lead Sioban (BEng, CMEngNZ, CPEng, Int(PE)NZ) is charged with keeping abreast of changes that impact the wider water industry and developing strategies for the business to respond. She is well connected to the global GHD business through representation for NZ on Mining and Water Business Forums. She is also part of the GHD NZ Diversity and Inclusion committee. 

Sioban has worked within the New Zealand mining industry for over 25 years and has international experience through extended secondments to both Denver and Melbourne. Her technical background is in minewater management and she has delivered and managed studies for most of the larger NZ mine sites as well as several aggregate quarries. A number of the studies she has completed have supported resource consent applications and required appearance at consent hearings and Environment Court. She has also acted as an Independent Reviewer for both DOC and the WCRC.

Her knowledge of mining projects is broad following three years seconded to Solid Energy New Zealand (2009-2012) as Project manager developing the Business Cases for new mine areas located at Stockton and at the historic Liverpool mine site. She followed this secondment with a three year period largely dedicated to the Central Plains project where she acted as project manager for design and construction support of the 17km long Stage 1 headrace; followed by feasibility design for Stage 2.

Sioban was on the Board of Water New Zealand for 5 years with one year as President and also sat on the New Zealand Minerals Association Council for 2 years. She is an assessor for IPENZ and actively mentors a number of junior engineers. For the last three years she has supported the University of Canterbury Civil Engineering degree course as invited lecturer for elements of the third year Design Pro course.
